Month Of Spooky 2024 - Week 4
On the podcast this week we have a story from the creative mind of Arch Obler. He was the director and producer of the OTR series Light’s Out. The story is called Valse Triste. I can’t confirm this but it appears to have been inspired by Sibelius’ “Valse triste” (Sad Waltz). Originally composed for a 1903 production of the play Kuolema (Death) by Arvid Järnefelt, the waltz captures the sense of…

RAS #408 - Poltergeist
On Ron’s Amazing Stories we end of the Month Of Spooky 2019. On this show, we are jammed packed with great stories. We have an original fiction tale from Heather who asks the question, “What if no one notices me?” Dave plays a game of Ding Dong Ditching, and the guy from Iowa sent in a creepy tale for Halloween. Then we head to the realm of Lights Out! for one of the golden age of radio’s scariest ever. It is titled Poltergeist. We also complete the month-long series of special five-minute mysteries. This last one has a special actor and friend who plays the part of Sherlock Holmes.
Featured Story - Poltergeist
Do you believe in Poltergeists? Our story just might change your mind. It comes from the OTR series Lights Out! and just might be the freakiest tale we have had yet during our Month Of Spooky. Arch Obler had a way of telling stories that make you want to run and hide. Not that it will do any good. This is one of the top 30 scariest stories ever of the golden age of radio. It is titled Poltergeist and first aired on December 16th, 1936.

A story you might like
Bathysphere
Arch Obler's half hour radio drama captures the conversation between a dictator and a scientist plunged to record breaking depths in a diving bell. First aired November of 1939.
Four reasons you might like it:
1) You've got a thing for deep-sea diving.
2) You think talkies ruined everything.
3) Somehow, dark psychological thrillers about man's struggle with life and death make you sleep better at night. Side note - you should watch Blade Runner
4) "It would be best to die in the dark."

Character actor William Phipps  said old time radio legend Arch Oboler was one of the most overrated talents in the business.
Oboler is widely considered one of the giants of OTR alongside Orson Welles, Norman Corwin, and a handful of other writer-producers. He was often called a genius.
Arch Oboler also made some offbeat films like Five, which Phipps appeared in.
“One of the crew, a very nice fella name of Art, said something that Oboler didn’t like,” recalled Phipps, “and Oboler hit him. With his fist. Cut him real bad – nasty gash, blood, the whole bit...
“I was there shortly afterwards and saw the guy – Oboler had broken his glasses and cut him all up. And there was a big lawsuit over it. That was a terrible thing; no matter what the guy said or did, there’s no excuse for that. But that’s Oboler for you …
“I appeared on an album that he did called Drop Dead, and a lot of it was scripts from his old Lights Out radio show. I just didn’t think they were any good!
“When it comes to Oboler and this genius bit, I don’t see it. Never did. I don’t think he was a genius at all. Not by any stretch of the imagination … he had clashes and run-ins with everybody… Oh, hell, he was a creep!”
